Abstract

Purpose: This study was conducted to develop a dementia care voluntary program for nursing students and to evaluate effects.

Methods: This research was a methodological triangulation study using a non-equivalent control group pretest-posttest design and focus group interviews. For the dementia care voluntary program, nursing students received education in dementia before visiting elderly people with early dementia. The program covered integrated care through 16 sessions (32 hours) over 8 months. Participants were 44 students recruited from W University, (experimental group: 20) and (control group: 24). Alzheimer¡¯s Disease Knowledge Scale and Dementia Attitudes Scale were used. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, t-test, repeated measure ANOVA with SPSS 22.0 and content analysis.

Results: Knowledge scores increased in both groups, however, changes did not differ significantly between groups or in the interaction between group and time. Scores differed significantly by time. Attitudes scores showed improvement in both groups, in addition, there were significant differences between groups, for time and interactions between group and time. Through qualitative analysis, two themes were extracted: ¡®changes in perception of elderly people with dementia¡¯ and ¡®self-growth.¡¯

Conclusion: This program was found to be effective in fostering nursing students¡¯ knowledge and positive attitudes toward people with dementia.
